Every winter, I find myself looking forward to travelling somewhere that feels completely different from my everyday surroundings. Rather than spending my holiday shopping and exploring busy cities, I feel more drawn to escaping familiar environments and discovering snow-covered mountains, icy seas, and the vast northern skies. Nordic destinations, in particular, have always held a special place on my travel wish list.

Recently, I started exploring Hurtigruten more closely and discovered that it offers much more than ordinary sea voyages. Its itineraries include unique experiences centred around Arctic landscapes, the Northern Lights, and local culture. As someone who enjoys discovering new things, I find this combination of sailing and land-based adventures incredibly appealing.
1. Astronomy Voyage on Original: Finding Travel Inspiration Beneath the Stars
I have always been fascinated by astronomy and the beauty of the night sky, which is why Hurtigruten’s Astronomy Voyage on Original immediately caught my attention. This 12-day roundtrip voyage departs from Bergen, travels to Kirkenes, and returns to Bergen, stopping at 34 ports along the way. It also features experiences led by professional astronomers.
What I particularly love about this type of journey is its educational and exploratory nature. I can imagine spending the day admiring Norway’s snow-covered mountains and charming fishing villages, then having the opportunity to observe the stars in the evening, far away from the light pollution of major cities.
Being able to enjoy the natural scenery while learning more about the universe and the science behind the Northern Lights would make the experience especially rewarding for me.By combining expert presentations with coastal sailing, Hurtigruten makes me realise that travelling is not just about admiring beautiful views. It can also be a wonderful opportunity to broaden my knowledge and discover something new.

2. Follow the Northern Lights – Norway to Finland: An Arctic Adventure Across Nordic Countries
If I were looking for a more varied winter adventure, Hurtigruten’s Follow the Northern Lights – Norway to Finland would definitely be on my list. This 17-day journey combines sea voyages with land-based exploration, departing from Oslo, travelling through northern Norway, and continuing towards Helsinki in Finland.
What excites me most is the variety of winter experiences included in this journey. Whether it is travelling through snowy landscapes on a scenic train or staying in a glass-roofed cabin while waiting for the Northern Lights to appear, everything sounds wonderfully romantic. I am particularly attracted to the idea of staying in a glass-roofed accommodation because I could enjoy the beauty of the winter sky while remaining warm and comfortable indoors.
Hurtigruten brings together cruising, rail travel, and distinctive Nordic activities, which means I would not have to spend all my time organising transportation. Instead, I could focus more on enjoying the scenery and making the most of every experience along the way.
3. The North Cape Line – North: Sailing North to Experience the Magic of the Arctic Circle
I have always dreamed of experiencing the Arctic Circle more closely, and Hurtigruten’s The North Cape Line – North sounds like a wonderful way to do that. This approximately seven-day voyage travels from Oslo to Tromsø, stopping at seven ports along the way. It also includes meals throughout the journey and selected drinks.
I particularly like the itinerary because it gives me the opportunity to gradually travel deeper into northern Norway. As the ship sails further north, the surrounding landscapes continue to change. As someone who enjoys photography, I would find the snow-covered mountains, magnificent fjords, and coastal towns especially worth capturing.
I am also looking forward to exploring Tromsø. The city has a distinctive Arctic atmosphere and is a popular destination for travellers hoping to see the Northern Lights. Hurtigruten offers me a way to approach these fascinating destinations gradually by sea, rather than rushing through a trip focused only on ticking off popular attractions.

4. The North Cape Line – South: Heading South with Wonderful Winter Memories
When a trip comes to an end, I usually prefer not to rush straight home. Instead, I like having enough time to reflect on the journey and enjoy a few more discoveries along the way. That is why Hurtigruten’s The North Cape Line – South has also caught my attention.
This approximately nine-day voyage travels from Tromsø to Oslo, stopping at eight ports along the way. It also includes meals throughout the journey and selected drinks. Unlike the northbound route, this voyage allows me to gradually travel from the Arctic region towards southern Norway, discovering new landscapes throughout the return journey.
I look forward to experiencing the different coastal towns along the route. Perhaps I would spend some time on deck admiring the winter sea, or step ashore during a port stop to wander through local streets and experience the everyday rhythm of Nordic life. For me, a journey that allows plenty of time for observation and discovery is much more meaningful than one focused simply on visiting as many attractions as possible.
Discovering a Different Side of Myself During Winter
After exploring these four Hurtigruten travel experiences, I feel even more excited about the possibilities of winter travel. From the stargazing experiences of Astronomy Voyage on Original to the cross-country adventure of Follow the Northern Lights, and the northbound and southbound journeys of The North Cape Line, each itinerary reveals a different side of Nordic winter.
What I particularly appreciate about Hurtigruten is its approach to combining nature exploration, local culture, and comfortable sailing experiences. For American travellers who have already experienced traditional city sightseeing, I believe this kind of immersive Nordic journey could offer a refreshing alternative.
For my next winter holiday, I hope to step into a truly magical world of snow and ice, experience the power of nature across vast Arctic waters, and perhaps, on a peaceful evening, be lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights I have been dreaming of for so long. For me, that is the kind of unexpected travel magic that makes a journey with Hurtigruten so appealing.
