I have always believed that the most appealing part of travelling is not simply arriving in an unfamiliar city, but discovering beautiful landscapes and different ways of life along the journey. Rather than following a packed itinerary and rushing from one attraction to another every day, I have gradually become more drawn to slower-paced journeys that allow me to experience local culture more deeply.

Recently, Norway has caught my attention. With its magnificent fjords, charming towns nestled between mountains, peaceful fishing villages, and breathtaking Nordic scenery, it is a destination I have long wanted to explore.
While looking for the right way to experience the country, I discovered Hurtigruten. With its long history of sailing along Norway’s coastline, the brand has shown me that a cruise can be about much more than simply enjoying beautiful views. It can also offer a closer connection to local communities and everyday coastal life.
1. The Coastal Express – Roundtrip: Experiencing the Beauty of Norway’s Coastline
If I were to choose a journey that would allow me to experience Norway in depth, Hurtigruten’s The Coastal Express – Roundtrip would be one of my first choices. This roundtrip voyage departs from Bergen, travels to Kirkenes, and returns to Bergen. The complete journey takes approximately 12 days and includes stops at 34 ports along the way.
What I particularly love about this itinerary is its relaxed pace. I can imagine waking up each morning to a different coastal landscape. One day, I might see layers of majestic mountains, while the next could bring peaceful bays or small villages tucked along the shoreline. For me, this constant change of scenery is one of the most precious parts of travelling.
Another appealing feature is that Hurtigruten includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner on this journey. I would not have to worry about arranging meals every day, allowing me to spend more time enjoying the views outside my window and making the most of the relaxing atmosphere on board.

2. The Coastal Express – North: Heading North in Search of Breathtaking Landscapes
I have always been curious about northern Norway, which is why Hurtigruten’s The Coastal Express – North also appeals to me. This approximately seven-day voyage travels from Bergen to Kirkenes, passing through destinations such as Trondheim, Bodø, and Tromsø.
I would love the opportunity to experience the individual character of these different towns and cities. Rather than simply visiting popular attractions and taking photographs, I prefer wandering through local streets, admiring the architecture, exploring harbours, and observing everyday life. Tromsø, in particular, has always fascinated me because of its distinctive Arctic atmosphere.
Hurtigruten also provides meals throughout the journey, while the changing seasons offer opportunities to admire different fjord landscapes. In my opinion, this route is ideal for travellers who want to spend a week discovering northern Norway without making their itinerary feel too rushed.
3. The Coastal Express – South: Discovering Another Side of Norway on the Return Journey
One of the things I find most interesting about travelling is that viewing the same destination from a different direction can create an entirely new experience. Hurtigruten’s The Coastal Express – South travels from Kirkenes back to Bergen, taking approximately six days. It is another option that I find particularly appealing.
I am especially excited about the possibility of passing the Lofoten Islands. Their colourful seaside houses, dramatic mountain peaks, and crystal-clear waters make the region look like something straight out of a Nordic postcard. If I had the opportunity, I would love to step ashore during selected port stops, explore the natural surroundings at my own pace, sample local food, and return to the ship with new memories.
Hurtigruten includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner on this route as well. As someone who enjoys nature photography, coastal scenery, and exploring small towns, I find this combination of comfort and discovery particularly attractive.

4. The North Cape Line – Roundtrip: Turning a Nordic Adventure into an Unforgettable Memory
While the first three routes make me dream about the everyday beauty of Norway’s coastline, Hurtigruten’s The North Cape Line – Roundtrip inspires an even greater sense of adventure and curiosity about the Arctic.
This approximately 15-day voyage departs from Oslo, travels to Honningsvåg, and returns to Oslo, with stops at 13 ports along the way. The journey highlights the North Cape and the spectacular landscapes along the Arctic coastline, while winter departures also offer opportunities to search for the Northern Lights.I have always felt that witnessing the Northern Lights is worth planning an entire trip around.
Although nobody can guarantee that they will appear during every journey, I would still be willing to travel somewhere more remote for the possibility of experiencing this extraordinary natural phenomenon. Hurtigruten also offers an all-inclusive dining experience with selected drinks on this voyage, making it easier for me to relax and enjoy the journey without worrying about every little detail.
Rediscovering the Meaning of Travel
After exploring Hurtigruten’s different itineraries, I have realised that my interest in Norway is no longer limited to visiting a particular attraction. Instead, I have started looking forward to experiencing the entire coastal journey. From Bergen and its surrounding fjords to peaceful fishing harbours and the landscapes of the far north, every part of the voyage seems to offer a story worth remembering.
What I appreciate about the way Hurtigruten approaches travel is the opportunity to enjoy spectacular natural scenery while also experiencing authentic coastal life. Whether I choose the complete roundtrip journey with The Coastal Express or the Arctic adventure offered by The North Cape Line, I hope to slow down, appreciate my surroundings, and rediscover the simple pleasures of travelling.
For me, a truly memorable journey does not necessarily need to be filled with activities or attractions. Sometimes, all it takes is an unexpected moment when the scenery in front of me leaves me feeling genuinely amazed. Perhaps that is exactly why I look forward to exploring Norway’s coastline with Hurtigruten.
